What does it do?

The AEC is a component that handles subscriptions to your joomla! Website. It lets you publish payment plans that users can choose from when registering that set their expiration.

As the administrator, you can assign many different payment gateways (such as PayPal or Authorize.net) to those plans. The user has to issue a payment according to this plan and will be activated when the payment arrives.

Introducing the AEC

With the AEC, Paid Subscriptions are set up in no time - simply install the component, follow the Quickstart Manual (on the internal help page) to configure your registration process and create payment plans. Next time a user tries to register, he or she will (as an example) first be prompted to select one of the plans and to issue the payment that is required with that plan. You can also integrate the subscription process into your regular Joomla! or CommunityBuilder registration.
What about Trials?

The AEC fully supports trial periods to your payment plans so your users can first test your offer before paying you money. When the trial period is over, that user will be prompted to issue a payment for his/her account. We also support automatic Trials, like those supported by PayPal Subscriptions - in that case, the payments are all handled by PayPal and the AEC.
What exactly happens when an account expires?

If the user chose a re-occurring payment (like PayPal Subscriptions), the account will simply be stay activated, since a payment is issued before his account expires.

If the user payed a one-time fee, the account will, at first, be deactivated. When trying to login, the user will be prompted with an expiration page and can click a "Renew" button to renew his/her subscription. This will forward the user to the same payment plans page that (s)he started the subscription with. When completing the chosen payment, the account will be activated again.
What happens to my old users?

By default, your existing users are handled as "not configured" within the AEC. That way, you can choose what to do with them - either grant them some time before they have to pay by setting up an expiration date or instantly expire them so that they have to select a payment plan as well. If you set the AEC to always require subscriptions, the old users will be prompted to select a payment plan to set up a subscription on the next login.
