Joomla 1.6 Status Update

Joomla 1.6 is the next generation of Joomla, the most popular Open Source Content Management System in the world.  This page tells you about the status of development and where you can download files.

The broad goals of Joomla 1.6 are to:

• implement an expanded access control system;
• implement a nested categories solution;
• and standardise the way extensions are built using the MVC framework.

To achieve those things there is a lot of other ancillary work to be done, but those are the highlights of this new version.

Version 1.6 Beta Release Schedule

• Beta1 released 17 May 2010
• Beta2 released 31 May 2010
• Beta3 released 14 June 2010
• Beta4 released 28 June 2010
• Beta5 released 12 July 2010
• Beta6 released 26 July 2010
• Next release: beta7 scheduled for 9 August 2010

The beta release is for testing purposes only and should not be used on a production site.

Future Release Predictions

It is impossible to give a definite time for future releases of Joomla 1.6.  Our best "guess" for the availability of future versions is late summer of 2010 for the first stable version.  The ability to deliver at these times is directly proportional to the amount of volunteer help the project receives.

Community Discussions and Assistance

Discussion about Joomla 1.6 are happening at two levels.

Bugs can be raised on the Joomla 1.6 Issue Tracker if you are using the most current nightly build or the latest source code from Subversion.  Please do not tell us about bugs in the Alpha 2 release because many of them have already been fixed. Most specifically we want to know about problems in the extensions listed as Beta-ready.
